i think the background really fits in. and the scribbles don't look fake at all. you could have put more texture on the scroll. like shading

wow, this so makes me think of sanzo from sayuki. it's the scroll is all :) but yes, this is very nice, even with it's "lack of background". It has very good flow, and mostly nothing seems "stiff"
